China is the dominant global eggplant producer (~38 million t/year), primarily consumed domestically and traded regionally across East Asia. Turkey is Europe's leading eggplant exporter, supplying Germany, France, and the Netherlands with field-grown Italian/globe-type aubergines from the Aegean and Mediterranean regions. Egypt exports eggplant to European and Gulf markets, particularly during the northern European off-season. The Netherlands produces greenhouse eggplant (grafted on rootstocks for higher yield) for the premium European retail market. India produces large quantities of brinjal for domestic consumption; exports are primarily of fresh brinjal to the UK and Middle Eastern diaspora markets.
Variety & Type Guide
Italian globe/oval (Violetta di Firenze type, 200–500 g): the dominant European retail and food-service variety; deep purple skin, white flesh, mild flavour. Black Beauty/large oval (standard US type): most common North American commercial variety. Japanese long/slender (15–25 cm, thin purple skin): standard in Japanese and Korean cuisine; tender skin, fewer seeds. Chinese long (20–35 cm, lighter purple): similar to Japanese but larger; used across Chinese and Southeast Asian cuisine. Thai round (golf ball to baseball size, green or purple-green): used in Thai curries, intensely flavoured. Indian brinjal (Bharta type, large round, 300–500 g; also small round for masala): the backbone of South Asian cuisine. White eggplant: mild flavour, used in Japanese/Mediterranean fine dining; premium niche.
Quality Standards & Certifications
UNECE Standard FFV-5 governs aubergine/eggplant quality grades in European trade (Extra, Class I, Class II), covering firmness, colour uniformity, calyx condition, and freedom from defects. EU MRL Regulation 396/2005 applies; eggplant is frequently flagged in RASFF for imidacloprid, acetamiprid, and chlorpyrifos residues. Bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum race 3) is a quarantine organism in many countries — phytosanitary certificate required. GLOBALG.A.P. is the minimum certification for European retail. Dutch greenhouse eggplant additionally holds MPS-A environmental certification. Grafting onto disease-resistant rootstocks (Solanum torvum or S. sisymbriifolium) is now standard in Dutch greenhouse production.
