Wholesale Watermelon & Melon Suppliers
Watermelons represent a $33.9 billion global wholesale market, and the broader melon category (cantaloupe, honeydew, Galia, Piel de Sapo, and specialty varieties) adds further significant value. China produces approximately 79% of global watermelon production but most is consumed domestically. Turkey, Iran, Brazil, USA, Mexico, and Spain are the major export origins. Melons and watermelons are warm-season crops with well-defined seasonal supply windows; year-round availability for northern hemisphere buyers requires sourcing from multiple origins.

Seedless watermelon (Triploid hybrids): now dominant in North American and European wholesale trade; varieties include Sugar Heart, Extazy, Crimson Sweet Seedless, and Jubilee Seedless; require polleniser (seeded diploid) plants in production. Seeded watermelons: dominant in Asian markets and some Middle Eastern markets; Charleston Grey, Crimson Sweet, Sugar Baby. Icebox watermelons (3–6 kg): compact size for individual household purchase; premium retail segment. Giant watermelons (12–20 kg): standard commercial size for wholesale/foodservice slicing. Mini/Personal watermelons (1–3 kg): growing premium retail segment. Yellow/orange flesh varieties: specialty market segment; higher Brix (≥12°) commands premium. For export, key specifications are: Brix ≥10° (buyers typically require ≥11°), skin uniformity, minimum weight per variety range, rind firmness (tendrils brown and crisp = mature).
Melon Types: From Cantaloupe to Piel de Sapo
Cantaloupe (Western European type) / Charentais: ribbed, orange flesh, intense aroma; short shelf life (10–14 days); France, Spain, Senegal. Cantaloupe (North American type): netted skin, orange flesh; USA, Mexico, Costa Rica; Brix ≥9°. Honeydew: smooth green/white skin, pale green flesh; excellent shelf life (3–4 weeks); Spain, USA. Galia: Israeli origin; netted skin, green-white flesh, aromatic; Spain, Israel, Brazil; Brix ≥12°. Piel de Sapo (Toad Skin): Spanish type; oval, green-striped skin, white flesh; excellent 6–8 week shelf life; Spain (Castile-La Mancha) dominant; PDO claims for specific areas. Canary (Juan Canary / Amarillo): bright yellow, white flesh; USA and Latin America. Casaba: wrinkled yellow skin; USA. Persian Melon: Iran origin; widely consumed in Middle East. For trade: Piel de Sapo and Honeydew are preferred for sea freight due to shelf life; Charentais/Cantaloupe is primarily suited for short-transit markets or airfreight.
EU Marketing Standards and Listeria Risk
EU Commission Regulation 2017/626 covers fresh melon marketing standards. Class Extra and Class I require characteristic variety shape, colour, and Brix ≥8° (melon) measured at the equatorial zone. Class II allows minor shape deviations. Pre-cut melons are regulated under EU food safety regulations (Regulation 178/2002, 852/2004) due to Listeria monocytogenes risk on cut surfaces. Listeria outbreaks have been associated with pre-cut cantaloupe (USA 2011; EU 2023). For bulk buyers of pre-cut melon for foodservice, suppliers must demonstrate HACCP controls, environmental Listeria monitoring programs, and regular shelf-life validation testing. FSMA Preventive Controls rule (USA) applies to RTE pre-cut fruit processors. Cold chain at 0–4°C is critical for pre-cut melon.
