Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) and Phytosanitary Requirements
Mango fruit fly (Bactrocera dorsalis and Bactrocera correcta complex) is the primary phytosanitary barrier for mango market access. USDA APHIS requires phytosanitary treatment for mangos from most Asian and Central American origins. Approved USDA treatment: Vapour Heat Treatment (VHT) at 46.1°C (115°F) for 20 minutes at the centre of the fruit — validated by USDA for mangos from India, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and Mexico under specific Work Plans. Treatment must be conducted at USDA-inspected treatment facilities. Japan (MAFF) requires VHT at 47.3°C for 20 minutes for mango imports from the Philippines. Australia (DAFF) permits Indian Alphonso mangos only through approved inspection systems including VHT. EU does not require VHT for mangos but requires phytosanitary certificates from the exporting country NPPO certifying freedom from regulated pests.
