Vacuum packaging bags are designed to be sealed under vacuum — removing the air around the product to extend shelf life by inhibiting aerobic microbial growth and oxidation. The standard food-grade vacuum bag is a two-layer laminate combining nylon (polyamide, PA) as the outer layer for puncture resistance and oxygen barrier, with a polyethylene (PE) heat-seal layer. PA/PE structures are the workhorse of food vacuum packaging — used for fresh and processed meats, cheese, cured products, smoked fish, and cooked foods. For higher oxygen barrier requirements or long shelf-life applications, a PA/EVOH/PE structure incorporates an EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) layer that significantly reduces oxygen transmission rate — extending shelf life for products where residual oxygen must be minimised. Bag thickness (expressed in microns) determines puncture resistance and seal quality: 70–90 micron is standard for fresh meats and soft foods; 90–120 micron for bone-in cuts and products with sharp edges; 120+ micron for industrial applications or products with high puncture risk. Food-grade vacuum bags must comply with EU Regulation 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR for food contact, and the manufacturer must provide a Declaration of Compliance. For shrink vacuum bags used in retail display — where the bag conforms tightly to the product shape after immersion in hot water — specify a shrink-on-demand PVDC-barrier or PA/PE shrink structure.
