Refined sunflower oil (RBD sunflower oil) is the world's third-most traded edible oil by volume after palm and soybean oils. It is produced from sunflower seeds by solvent extraction or cold pressing, followed by refining, bleaching, and deodorisation. The result is a pale yellow, neutral-tasting oil that is liquid at ambient temperature. Sunflower oil is traded in two principal grade profiles based on fatty acid composition: **Mid-oleic (conventional) sunflower oil** — also called standard or linoleic sunflower oil — contains approximately 60–70% linoleic acid (C18:2, polyunsaturated) and 15–25% oleic acid (C18:1, monounsaturated). This is the dominant commercially traded grade — the sunflower oil in most retail bottles, food service containers, and food manufacturing applications globally. Its smoke point is approximately 225–230°C. The relatively high linoleic acid content means it has moderate oxidative stability — suitable for most general cooking, frying, and cold applications, but not the best choice for prolonged high-temperature industrial frying where oil longevity is critical. **High-linoleic sunflower oil** is a variant with linoleic acid content above 70%, used in specific food manufacturing and cosmetic applications where maximum polyunsaturated fat content is required. It is less stable than mid-oleic at frying temperatures. In practice, most buyers looking for standard refined sunflower oil are sourcing mid-oleic (conventional) grade. **High-oleic sunflower oil** is a separate product line (see high-oleic sunflower oil page) with inverted fatty acid profile — approximately 80–85% oleic acid — providing significantly better frying stability. High-oleic commands a premium price and is a distinct specification from standard refined sunflower oil. **Applications for standard refined sunflower oil:** Retail bottled cooking oil, food service 10–20L containers, salad dressings and mayonnaise, bakery and confectionery products, snack and chip frying where oil is changed regularly, margarine and spread production, and food manufacturing as a neutral carrier oil. The neutral flavour and light colour make it a versatile base for a wide range of food product formulations.
