Plastic pallets are unit-load platforms produced from injection-moulded or blow-moulded HDPE or PP — used for warehouse storage, pallet racking, production floor transport, and export shipping as an alternative to wooden pallets. Key plastic pallet specification parameters are: pallet size — the most important parameter for pallet system compatibility. Standard sizes are Euro pallet (1,200mm × 800mm), ISO full pallet (1,200mm × 1,000mm), and North American standard (48 × 40 inches / 1,219mm × 1,016mm). Confirm the pallet pool or racking system standard for your market. Entry type — two-way entry (forklift tines can enter from two ends) vs four-way entry (forklift or pallet truck entry from all four sides — the standard for warehouse racking and most logistics applications). Deck construction — full-perimeter solid deck (a solid flat surface, no gaps — for small items and granular products); open deck (a grid surface — lighter weight and lower cost, suitable for products in bags, boxes, or on trays); and anti-slip surface options. Load capacity — dynamic load capacity (rated load when pallet is in motion on a flat surface, typically 1,000–3,000kg); static load capacity (rated load at rest, typically 4,000–8,000kg for racking applications); and racking load capacity (rated load when supported in a warehouse rack, typically 1,000–2,000kg). Nestable vs stackable — nestable pallets stack inside each other when empty (saving return storage space — ideal for one-way or export applications); rackable stackable pallets stack with load on top of each other (for storage-efficient warehousing).
Food-grade, export, and purchasing guidance
Food-grade plastic pallets are required in food manufacturing, food retail distribution, and food export applications where the pallet is in contact with food products or in a food production or storage area subject to hygiene regulations. Food-grade plastic pallets are: produced from virgin food-grade HDPE or PP resin (not from recycled content that may contain chemical residues); free of cracks, crevices, and rough surfaces that would harbour bacteria; washable and sanitisable (smooth surface suitable for high-pressure washing and chemical sanitisation); and compliant with applicable food safety regulations. Plastic pallets comply with ISPM 15 (the international standard for wooden packaging material that requires heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation) — plastic pallets do not require ISPM 15 treatment and can be exported without phytosanitary certification, which is a significant practical advantage for export applications. This makes plastic pallets the preferred choice for export packaging where repeated entry to regulated markets is required. The largest market for plastic pallets in consumer goods is FMCG manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and export shipping. Chinese manufacturers produce the full range of standard plastic pallets at competitive pricing — typical 1,200mm × 1,000mm rackable plastic pallets in HDPE are available at $15–35 per pallet at volume depending on specification. MOQs from Chinese manufacturers are typically 50–200 units for standard sizes; custom sizes or colours have higher MOQs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a nestable and a rackable plastic pallet?
A nestable plastic pallet is designed so that empty pallets can be stacked inside each other (nested) — reducing storage space for empty pallet returns or storage. Nestable pallets are typically lighter and designed for one-way or short-cycle logistics applications. A rackable plastic pallet has runners or feet designed to allow it to sit correctly in warehouse pallet racking (beams support the outer edges of the pallet) — rackable pallets must have sufficient racking load capacity (typically 1,000–2,000kg) and rigid structure to span the racking beam distance without deflecting. Rackable pallets are typically heavier and more expensive than nestable formats. For warehouse rack storage applications, always specify rackable and confirm the racking beam span and load rating.
Do plastic pallets require ISPM 15 phytosanitary treatment?
No — plastic pallets are exempt from ISPM 15 (the International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15), which only applies to wooden packaging material (wooden pallets, crates, dunnage, etc.). Wooden pallets must be heat-treated or fumigated with methyl bromide and marked with the official ISPM 15 mark before export to most countries. Plastic pallets require no such treatment and can be exported freely without a phytosanitary certificate. This makes plastic pallets particularly attractive for export-oriented manufacturers and for businesses that frequently export goods to different international markets.
Can I use recycled plastic pallets?
Recycled content plastic pallets are widely available — many black plastic pallets are produced from mixed recycled HDPE (including post-consumer packaging recycled content). These are suitable for general industrial, construction, and distribution applications. For food manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and healthcare applications, pallets used in the production or storage area are typically required to be produced from virgin resin to ensure no chemical contamination from unknown recycled content. Some recycled-content pallet manufacturers can supply pallets with a Declaration of Compliance for specific recycled content PCR (post-consumer resin) sources — confirm with your food safety or quality team whether recycled-content pallets are acceptable for your application.
