Small-scale oil mills — equipment and viability

Small-scale oil mills — typically processing between 50kg and 2,000kg of oilseed per day — serve community-level, farm-gate, and artisanal oil production in many markets. Equipment commonly used includes: single-phase electric or diesel-powered screw presses (expellers); simple seed cleaning screens; and settling or filter cloth for crude oil clarification. The output is typically unrefined or partially refined oil sold directly to local consumers. The advantage of small-scale processing is low capital cost, local employment creation, and proximity to smallholder oilseed farmers who may struggle to transport small quantities to large mills. Key challenges are: the unrefined oil quality may not meet formal retail or export standards without further refining; oil extraction yield from small-scale screw presses may be lower than commercial-scale equipment; and consistency of product quality can be variable. Mini oil presses are available for coconut, groundnut, sesame, sunflower, palm kernel, moringa, and a range of other oilseeds.
