Compostable packaging is packaging that, when composted in the correct composting environment, breaks down into CO₂, water, and biomass within a defined timeframe — leaving no harmful residues. Two composting environments are relevant for packaging: industrial composting (the standard in most composting certification schemes) involves temperatures of 55–60°C maintained for weeks in a managed composting facility — conditions not replicated in a home compost bin. Home composting involves lower, ambient temperatures over longer periods — a more demanding environment that only certain materials and constructions can meet. The key compostability certification standards are: EN 13432 (the EU industrial compostability standard — the most widely recognised in Europe); ASTM D6400 (the US equivalent); OK Compost Industrial (TÜV AUSTRIA certification scheme based on EN 13432); OK Compost HOME (TÜV AUSTRIA home composting certification — the more demanding standard for home compostability claims); and BPI Compostable (US certification programme based on ASTM D6400). Do not make compostable claims on packaging without certification from a recognised certification body — unsubstantiated compostable claims are subject to enforcement action by the UK CMA, US FTC (Green Guides), and EU under the Green Claims Directive. PLA bioplastic materials, infrastructure limitations, and ordering guidance
PLA (polylactic acid) is the most widely used bioplastic for compostable packaging applications — produced from fermented plant starch (typically corn, sugarcane, or cassava). PLA is industrially compostable under EN 13432 and ASTM D6400. Standard PLA is rigid at room temperature and suitable for cold drink cups, cold food containers, and food service lids. CPLA (crystallised PLA) withstands temperatures up to approximately 85°C and is used for hot drink cup lids and hot food service containers. PLA film is used as a clear or opaque packaging film, and as a compostable inner lining for paper packaging (replacing PE in cups, bags, and boxes to produce compostable-certified paper packaging). Infrastructure limitation: industrial compostable packaging can only fulfil its environmental benefit if it is collected and sent to industrial composting facilities — which are not universally available. PLA packaging contaminating plastic recycling streams is a growing problem; recyclers regard PLA as a contaminant in PET and PP streams. Before specifying compostable packaging, confirm the composting collection and processing infrastructure available in your specific market and for your end-consumer context. Compostable claims must be accurate for the composting environment available to your consumers. From a sourcing perspective, compostable packaging items (PLA cups, bagasse plates, cellulose bags) are produced in significant volume in China and are available at competitive wholesale pricing. MOQs are typically 5,000–20,000 units for standard stock items; custom-printed or custom-formed items have MOQs of 3,000–10,000 units.

Is compostable packaging better for the environment than recyclable packaging?
It depends on the available end-of-life infrastructure. Recyclable packaging that is actually recycled (i.e., the recycling collection and processing system is in place, and consumers use it) typically has a lower carbon and resource footprint than composting. Compostable packaging is most beneficial when: the product is contaminated with food waste that prevents recycling (e.g., a food service container soiled with sauce); industrial composting collection is available at the point of use; and the alternative packaging format is genuinely non-recyclable. The worst outcome is compostable packaging that ends up in general waste (landfill or incineration) because no composting infrastructure is available — in this case it provides no sustainability benefit over standard packaging. Always assess end-of-life infrastructure before choosing compostable packaging as a sustainability strategy.
What does EN 13432 certification mean?
EN 13432 is the European standard that defines the requirements for packaging to be called 'industrially compostable'. It specifies four key requirements: biodegradability (60% of organic carbon must convert to CO₂ within 6 months); disintegration (90% of the packaging must pass through a 2mm sieve within 12 weeks); absence of negative effects on the composting process; and low concentrations of heavy metals and regulated substances. Packaging certified to EN 13432 has been independently tested and certified by an accredited laboratory or certification body (e.g., TÜV AUSTRIA, DIN CERTCO, Vinçotte). This certification is required to make industrial compostability claims in most EU markets and is increasingly required by industrial composters that accept food service packaging.
Can I mix compostable packaging with recycling?
No — compostable packaging should not be placed in plastic recycling streams. PLA is a contaminant in PET and PP recycling and, if present in quantity, can degrade the quality of the recycled material. Compostable packaging should be directed to food waste or organic collection (where industrial composting collection is available), or home composting (if the product is certified for home composting).
