Building Materials Wholesale Suppliers in Nigeria
Building materials in Nigeria are bought wholesale from three sources: manufacturers and their distributors for cement, steel, roofing sheets, paint and cables; importers for most tiles, sanitary ware and fittings; and the specialist building materials markets, such as Odun-Ade at Orile Coker in Lagos and Dei-Dei in Abuja, where dealers in every line trade side by side. This guide covers each product group, where the trade clusters, when to buy direct, and how to use the MANCAP and SONCAP marks to avoid substandard goods.

Construction materials are heavy, bulky and costly to move, so the trade is more regional than most. Where a lighter product might be bought in Lagos and carried anywhere, a builder in Abuja, Port Harcourt or Kano will usually buy cement, sand, blocks, steel and timber close to the site, and travel only for high-value finishing items.
The supply chain differs by product. Cement, reinforcement steel, roofing sheets, paints, pipes and cables are largely made in Nigeria, and manufacturers sell through appointed distributors. Tiles are both made locally and imported. Sanitary ware, taps, door hardware, lighting and many electrical accessories are mostly imported, largely from China, and reach the market through importers based mainly in Lagos.
Around these sit the building materials markets, where hundreds of dealers hold stock and sell to contractors, developers, artisans and smaller shops. They are the practical place to buy mixed orders, to compare brands, and to find items at short notice. Large contractors use all three sources at once: distributors for bulk structural materials, importers for finishes, and the markets for balance and urgent needs.
Cement, reinforcement steel and roofing sheets
Cement is sold by the manufacturers to distributors in trailer loads and reaches sites through depots and dealers. Order by brand and strength grade, since 42.5 is the general-purpose grade for concrete and blocks, and buy only what you can use while it is fresh.
Reinforcement steel, known as rods or iron rods, is produced by local rolling mills and also imported. Bars are sold in standard 12 metre lengths by diameter, commonly 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 and 25 millimetres, and priced by the tonne or the length. The common problem is undersized bar, where a rod sold as 12 millimetres measures noticeably less. Carry a vernier caliper, measure several bars, and ask for the mill's test certificate on large orders. Structural steel should be the high-yield ribbed bar your engineer specifies.
Roofing sheets are mainly aluminium long-span sheets, with stone-coated steel tiles at the premium end and galvanised sheets at the low end. Price follows thickness, or gauge, and thin sheets are routinely passed off as thicker ones. Specify the thickness in millimetres on your order, measure it with a micrometer on delivery, and buy from a roofing company that cuts sheets to your measured roof lengths.
Tiles, sanitary ware and paint
Tiles are one of the biggest lines in the building materials markets. Nigeria has several tile factories producing ceramic and vitrified floor and wall tiles, and imported tiles from China, Spain, Italy, India and elsewhere cover the middle and upper ends of the market. When you buy, check the grade marked on the carton, open cartons to look for chipped edges and warped tiles, and make sure all your cartons carry the same batch and shade number, because shade varies between production runs. Buy a margin for cutting and breakage at the same time, since matching a batch later is often impossible.
Sanitary ware, such as WCs, basins, baths, showers and taps, is mostly imported and sold by importers and their market outlets. Inspect the glaze for cracks and pinholes, check that cisterns come with complete flushing fittings, and favour brands whose spare parts are sold locally.
Paint is largely made in Nigeria by established manufacturers who sell through distributors and their own depots. Adulterated and refilled paint sold in genuine-looking buckets is a real problem, so buy from the manufacturer's depot or a named distributor, check seals and batch numbers, and be suspicious of large discounts.

Plumbing covers PVC pressure and waste pipes, PPR pipes for hot and cold water, fittings, valves, water tanks and pumps. Pipes are made locally by several manufacturers and sold through distributors. Check that the pipe is marked along its length with the maker's name, the diameter and the pressure rating, and compare wall thickness between brands, since thin-walled pipe is cheaper for a reason.
Electrical materials are where substandard goods do the most harm. Cables, in particular, are a safety product: undersized or impure copper conductors overheat and cause fires. Nigerian cable manufacturers have a good reputation for quality, and many electricians insist on them. Buy cables from the manufacturer's distributor, check that the coil is labelled with the maker, size and length, and look at the conductor itself, which should be bright copper of the stated thickness.
Switches, sockets, distribution boards, circuit breakers and light fittings are mostly imported. Buy recognised brands from dealers who can show where the stock came from, and avoid unbranded breakers altogether, because a breaker that fails to trip gives no protection.
Where the wholesale trade clusters
Every large city has a building materials market, and asking local builders will quickly identify it. Two are worth naming because buyers travel to them.
- Odun-Ade building materials market, Orile Coker, Lagos. Sitting along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, it is known above all for tiles, sanitary ware, doors, plumbing fittings and other finishing materials. Many of the dealers are importers or their outlets, and buyers come from across the south-west and beyond.
- Dei-Dei building materials market, Abuja. Off the Kubwa-Zuba expressway, Dei-Dei brings together dealers in cement, steel, roofing, timber, tiles, sanitary ware, plumbing, electrical fittings, paints and doors, and serves contractors across the Federal Capital Territory and neighbouring states.
Other lines of the same trade are found in the big general markets. Alaba International Market in Lagos carries electrical materials, and Onitsha and Kano both have substantial building materials dealers serving the south-east and the north.
In any of these markets, walk the line before buying, compare several dealers for the same brand and specification, and buy from shops with a fixed address. Arrange your own truck or agree delivery terms clearly, and count and inspect goods as they are loaded.
Buying direct from manufacturers
Buying direct is worth exploring once your volumes are steady. Manufacturers of cement, steel, roofing, paint, pipes, cables and tiles all appoint distributors, and many will also open accounts for large contractors and developers.
The usual requirements are a registered business, tax details, a minimum order and payment before delivery. In return you get the factory price list, genuine stock, consistent specifications and, often, delivery to site and technical support. For a developer building an estate, negotiating supply of roofing, tiles, paint and cables directly with manufacturers can remove a whole layer of margin.
Contact the manufacturer's sales office through its published channels, not through an intermediary who asks for a fee. For imported finishes, the equivalent step is to buy from the importer's warehouse instead of a market shop, or to import directly once you know the product and the supplier well enough.

Find Wholesale Suppliers on TowoboStandards marks: MANCAP, SONCAP and your own checks
Building collapses are a recurring tragedy in Nigeria, and substandard materials are one of the recognised causes. The Standards Organisation of Nigeria regulates most building materials, and two schemes matter to a buyer.
MANCAP, the Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme, applies to products manufactured in Nigeria. Certified products carry the MANCAP mark with the Nigerian Industrial Standard details. Look for it on locally made cement, steel, roofing sheets, cables, pipes and paint.
SONCAP applies to regulated imports. It is evidenced by certificates issued for the consignment before shipment, so ask an importer to show the SONCAP certificate covering the goods you are buying.
A mark is a starting point, not a guarantee, so measure, weigh and test as described above. For finding and comparing suppliers, Towobo lists suppliers by product category with minimum order quantities, lead times, certifications and payment terms, and buyers can browse and request quotes at no cost. Verify any supplier yourself before you pay.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the biggest building materials market in Lagos?
The Odun-Ade building materials market at Orile Coker, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, is one of the largest and best known, particularly for tiles, sanitary ware, doors and plumbing fittings. Other parts of Lagos have their own building materials clusters, and Alaba International Market carries electrical materials.
Where do contractors buy building materials in Abuja?
The Dei-Dei building materials market, off the Kubwa-Zuba expressway, is the main wholesale centre for the Federal Capital Territory, covering cement, steel, roofing, timber, tiles, plumbing, electrical fittings and paint. Larger contractors also buy cement and steel through manufacturers' distributors.
How do I check that iron rods are the right size?
Measure them. Carry a vernier caliper and check the diameter of several bars from the bundle, confirm the bars are the full standard length, and ask for the mill's test certificate on large orders. Undersized bars are common, and they weaken the structure.
What is the difference between MANCAP and SONCAP?
Both are schemes of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria. MANCAP certifies products manufactured in Nigeria, which then carry the MANCAP mark. SONCAP covers regulated imported products and is evidenced by certificates issued before shipment, which an importer should be able to show you.
Can I buy building materials directly from manufacturers?
Yes, if your volumes are large enough. Manufacturers of cement, steel, roofing, paint, pipes, cables and tiles sell to distributors and often to large contractors and developers. Expect to need a registered business, a minimum order and payment before delivery.
How do I avoid fake or substandard building materials?
Buy from manufacturers' distributors or established dealers, look for the MANCAP mark or the importer's SONCAP documents, and check the product itself: measure steel and roofing thickness, inspect cable conductors, check seals and batch numbers on paint, and be wary of prices far below the market.
Why do tiles from the same brand look different?
Tiles vary slightly in shade and size between production batches. Always check that every carton carries the same batch and shade number, and buy your full quantity plus a margin for cutting and breakage in one purchase, because the same batch may not be available later.
Is it cheaper to buy building materials in Lagos and transport them?
For high-value finishing items such as tiles, sanitary ware and fittings, it often is, which is why buyers travel to Lagos. For heavy structural materials such as cement, steel, sand and blocks, haulage usually cancels the saving, so they are best bought near the site.
