Weight grader machines — design and food applications

A weight grader sorts individual food items by their individual weight, routing each item to the appropriate weight-grade discharge lane. Weight graders use dynamic weighing — items are individually weighed as they pass along a conveyor over a high-speed weigh cell or platform, and a pneumatic ejector or diverter directs each item to the correct weight-grade lane based on the measured weight. Weight graders are used for: fresh fruit (mangoes, avocados, citrus, apples — supermarket buyer specifications typically include weight range by count per carton, e.g. count 8 = maximum 8 fruits per 4 kg carton — the grader sorts to these weight ranges); eggs (egg graders weigh each egg and sort by weight class: very large, large, medium, small, etc., as defined by EU or relevant national standard); other individual items where a weight specification is defined by the buyer (tomatoes, onions, peppers, potatoes).
