Flexible packaging is produced from single-layer or multilayer laminate films that combine different polymer substrates to deliver the required mechanical, barrier, and sealing properties. The most common base substrates are biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) for general food packaging, biaxially oriented polyester (BOPET/PET) for higher-barrier applications, biaxially oriented polyamide (BOPA/nylon) for puncture-resistant vacuum and retort applications, and cast polypropylene (CPP) or polyethylene (PE) as the heat-seal layer. For premium barrier applications — oxygen-sensitive products like coffee, roasted nuts, or retort pouches — aluminium foil (AL foil) or metallised PET provide the highest barrier performance. EVOH (ethylene vinyl alcohol) coextruded structures offer a transparent high-barrier alternative to foil where product visibility is important. For food applications in EU markets, the laminate structure must comply with EU Regulation 10/2011 (plastic food contact materials) and the supplier must provide a Declaration of Compliance. FDA 21 CFR applies for the US market. BRCGS Packaging Materials certification is the primary food safety standard required by major food and beverage brand owners and retailers globally.
