EU Marketing Standards and Listeria Risk

EU Commission Regulation 2017/626 covers fresh melon marketing standards. Class Extra and Class I require characteristic variety shape, colour, and Brix ≥8° (melon) measured at the equatorial zone. Class II allows minor shape deviations. Pre-cut melons are regulated under EU food safety regulations (Regulation 178/2002, 852/2004) due to Listeria monocytogenes risk on cut surfaces. Listeria outbreaks have been associated with pre-cut cantaloupe (USA 2011; EU 2023). For bulk buyers of pre-cut melon for foodservice, suppliers must demonstrate HACCP controls, environmental Listeria monitoring programs, and regular shelf-life validation testing.
