Water bottling machine types and configurations

Water bottling machines fill treated water (still or carbonated) into PET bottles, apply caps, label, and package for distribution. The water bottling line may be configured as: separate machines (depalletiser/bottle unscramblee, rinser, filler, capper, labeller, case packer, palletiser) linked by conveyors; or a monoblock (integrated rinser-filler-capper in one machine), which is more compact and more hygienic for water products. Blow-fill-cap (BFC) monoblock or inline blow-fill-cap: the most hygienic and efficient configuration for high-volume water bottling; the PET preform is heated in an oven, then blown into the final bottle shape in the blow moulding section, immediately transferred to the filling section (without exposure to the environment), filled with water, and capped — all in one integrated machine; the bottle is never exposed to the outside environment between blowing and capping, minimising contamination risk; the standard configuration for large-scale water brands. Separate blow moulder + filling line: the PET blow moulding machine is separate from the filling line; blown bottles are conveyed via an air conveyor to the filling monoblock; more flexibility for running different bottle designs and changing bottle formats; suitable for medium-to-large scale operations. PET preforms — the raw material for blow-moulded PET water bottles; preforms are injection-moulded PET parts that are heated and blown into the final bottle; preforms are sourced from preform manufacturers and stored at the bottling plant. Still water filling: still (non-carbonated) water is filled using gravity, volumetric, or flow-meter fillers; filling is straightforward as the product is non-carbonated and non-viscous; filling speeds of 10,000–100,000+ bottles per hour are standard. Sparkling water filling: carbonated water is filled using an isobaric (counter-pressure) filler — the bottle is first pressurised with CO₂, then the carbonated water is filled against the CO₂ back pressure to prevent loss of carbonation; the filling head seals before the bottle is de-pressurised after capping.

PET preforms, caps, and sourcing

PET water bottles are produced from PET preforms (sourced from injection moulding operations) that are blown into the final bottle shape using a stretch blow moulding machine. Key components of a water bottling line: PET preforms — sourced from preform manufacturers; preform weight determines the bottle wall thickness; common weights: 10–14g for 0.5L water bottles; 18–25g for 1.5L bottles; 28–35g for 2L bottles; lighter preforms (lightweighting) reduce plastic consumption. Stretch blow moulding machine — heats the preform and blows it into the final bottle mould; output speeds of 1,000–3,500 cavities per hour per mould cavity (a 16-cavity machine at 2,000 BPH per cavity = 32,000 BPH). Closure — standard PET water bottle caps: 28mm PCO 1810 or 28mm PCO 1881 neck finish; the cap and neck standard must match across the blow mould, preform, and capping machine. Labelling — OPP pressure-sensitive labels or sleeve labels for water bottle branding; for water brands emphasising sustainability, paper-based or reduced-plastic labels. Water treatment — the water supply must be treated (filtration, UV sterilisation, ozonation) before bottling; water treatment is an upstream prerequisite for bottling, not part of the bottling machine itself. Key water bottling machine suppliers: Krones (Germany), KHS (Germany), Sidel/Tetra Pak (France), SIPA (Italy), CFT Group (Italy), and a range of Chinese manufacturers for small-to-medium scale water lines. When sourcing, specify: still or sparkling water, target output (BPH), bottle size range, blow mould and preform source, cap type, label type, hygiene requirements, and secondary packaging format.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a 28mm PCO 1810 and 28mm PCO 1881 neck finish?

PCO 1810 and PCO 1881 are standardised neck finish dimensions for PET beverage bottles with a 28mm outer diameter. PCO 1881 is a lighter, shorter neck finish than PCO 1810 — it was developed by a consortium led by ISBT to reduce neck weight and plastic consumption. PCO 1881 has become the dominant standard for water and CSD bottles globally, replacing PCO 1810 on most new installations. The preform, bottle mould, and cap must all use the same neck finish standard — mixing PCO 1810 and PCO 1881 components results in caps that do not seal properly. When specifying a water bottling line, confirm the neck standard across all components.

How much water treatment capacity is needed per hour of bottling?

Water treatment capacity must match or exceed the bottling machine's filling rate. For a 20,000 BPH line filling 0.5L bottles: required throughput = 20,000 × 0.5L = 10,000 litres per hour = 10 m³/hr of treated water. For a 60,000 BPH line on 1.5L bottles: 60,000 × 1.5L = 90,000 L/hr = 90 m³/hr. Water treatment (filtration, UV, ozonation, or reverse osmosis for specific water types) must be sized for the peak filling rate with a 20–30% safety margin. Treated water storage tank capacity should cover at least 30–60 minutes of production to absorb short downtime in the treatment system without stopping the filler.

Can a water bottling machine also fill juice or CSD?

A still water filler (gravity or volumetric) can usually fill non-carbonated juices and still beverages with minimal adjustment, provided the liquid viscosity is similar to water and the product is compatible with the filler material (stainless steel). For carbonated soft drinks (CSD), the filler must be an isobaric (counter-pressure) filler — a still water gravity filler cannot fill carbonated beverages as CO₂ would be lost during filling. For a multi-product beverage operation (water + juice + CSD), a programmable isobaric filler with different fill modes can be used for all three product types, or separate dedicated lines may be more practical for high-volume operations.
