CE Machinery Directive and safety for hydraulic presses
Hydraulic presses are classified as Annex IV machinery under the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC — meaning they require either: (a) certification by an EU-approved Notified Body (e.g. TÜV, BGIA, DGUV), or (b) manufacture in full conformity with harmonised standards covering all essential health and safety requirements. This is more stringent than the general Machinery Directive requirements for non-Annex IV machines. The key harmonised standards for hydraulic presses: EN 693 (machine tools — safety — hydraulic presses); EN ISO 13849 (safety of machinery — safety-related parts of control systems); EN ISO 13857 (safety distances for upper and lower limbs); EN 60204-1 (electrical equipment of machines — general requirements); and EN 574 (two-hand control devices). Critical safety functions: two-hand control devices preventing actuation unless both hands are on controls (EN 574 Type III C); light curtains (ESPE — electro-sensitive protective equipment) protecting the die space; hydraulic pressure relief valves preventing overload; and anti-fall protection for the ram (safety blocks or safety nuts preventing uncontrolled descent under gravity or hydraulic failure). For buyers procuring Chinese hydraulic presses for European deployment: insist on Notified Body certification (request the NB certificate and verify via the EU NANDO database), specify Pilz, SICK, or Schmersal safety components for safety-critical functions, and conduct FAT to verify all safety functions operate correctly before shipment.
