Rigid box construction types and materials
Rigid boxes (also called set-up boxes) are constructed from thick, rigid chipboard or greyboard wrapped in paper, fabric, or other materials — providing a premium, weighty, structurally robust packaging format used for luxury goods, gifting, cosmetics, electronics, chocolates, spirits, and premium branded products. Unlike folding cartons, rigid boxes are pre-assembled and cannot be flat-packed. The main construction types are: two-piece lid-and-base (also called lift-off lid) — the most common and recognisable rigid box format, with a separate lid that fits over a tray base; two-piece boxes may have a full-overlap lid (the lid extends over the full depth of the base) or a partial-overlap cap lid. Hinged boxes — a single structure with a lid and base joined by a fabric or paper hinge, opening like a clamshell — used for premium jewellery, watches, and high-end gifting; the most premium-feeling format with the highest tactile experience. Drawer boxes (match-box style) — an inner tray slides out of an outer sleeve — popular for chocolates, candles, and premium cosmetics. Telescope boxes — two trays of different depths that telescope over each other — a simple, sturdy format for heavier items. Board grades used in rigid box construction range from 1.5mm to 3mm chipboard or greyboard for the structure. The outer wrap paper or material determines the surface finish and brand aesthetic — available in art paper, linen texture, cotton texture, metallic paper, fabric, and suede-effect materials.
