Heat sealing joins thermoplastic packaging materials by applying controlled heat and pressure to the seal area, melting and fusing the polymer layers together. The main heat sealing technologies used in packaging are: impulse sealing — a thin resistance wire is momentarily heated by an electrical impulse when pressed against the packaging material; the wire heats and cools within each sealing cycle; suitable for PE and PP films and laminates up to medium gauge; standard for table-top bag sealers, foot-operated sealers, and semi-automatic sachet and pouch sealers; low running cost as the element only heats when sealing. Constant-heat sealing — a continuously heated jaw applies heat for a set dwell time; suitable for thicker films, foil laminates, and materials requiring a longer heat dwell; used on some tray sealers, form-fill-seal machines, and carton sealers. Band sealing — the packaging material passes between two moving heated belts; the belt speed controls the dwell time at temperature; suitable for continuous high-speed sealing of filled pouches and bags; standard for automated pouch lines, vertical bag filling lines, and food packaging. Ultrasonic sealing — high-frequency vibration generates friction heat at the seal interface; suitable for difficult-to-seal materials (foil laminates, coated papers) and for sealing through contaminated (product-smeared) seal areas. Film material compatibility is critical: PE and LDPE films (bread bags, produce bags, freezer bags) are the easiest to seal with impulse or band sealing. PP films require a higher seal temperature than PE. PA/PE (nylon/PE) laminates require specific seal temperature and pressure settings. Aluminium foil laminates require careful temperature control to prevent delamination. BOPP (oriented polypropylene, crisp and snack bags) requires a heated jaw at the correct temperature range.
