Spain is a significant producer of sunflower oil within the EU, with cultivation concentrated in Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, and Andalucía. Spanish sunflower oil production typically ranges from 400,000–700,000 tonnes per year depending on harvest conditions. Spain has a large solvent extraction industry processing both domestic and imported sunflower seed, with major producers including Aceites Abril, Koipe (part of the SOS Group), and regional cooperatives in Córdoba and Seville.

Spain is notable for its high-oleic sunflower oil production — Spanish breeders and seed companies were significant early developers of the high-oleic sunflower variety, and Spanish high-oleic production continues to serve European industrial fryers, confectionery manufacturers, and snack producers. Spanish high-oleic sunflower oil typically contains 82–85%+ oleic acid and is widely available in certified non-GMO grades, increasingly important for German and French retail buyers.

Spanish sunflower oil export routes run primarily from Tarragona, Valencia, Huelva, and Seville ports, serving North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia), West Africa, Latin America, and intra-EU shipments. As an EU member, Spain benefits from EU Single Market access with no customs duties on intra-EU trade.

Spanish suppliers typically hold ISO 22000, FSSC 22000, and IFS or BRC certification. Spanish organic sunflower oil is certified under EU organic regulations with certifiers including CAAE, BioInspecta, and Ecocert. Payment terms with Spanish suppliers are typically 30–60 days from invoice for established buyers, or L/C for first-time international transactions.

Questions fréquemment posées

What makes Spanish high-oleic sunflower oil distinctive?

Spain was an early pioneer in high-oleic sunflower development and Spanish producers have decades of experience with high-oleic varieties. Spanish high-oleic sunflower oil typically contains 82–85%+ oleic acid, making it among the most heat-stable grades available. It is widely used in European industrial frying for crisps, snack foods, and QSRs. Spanish high-oleic is often available in certified non-GMO grades, which is increasingly important for German and French retail buyers.

Can Spanish sunflower oil be exported to North Africa and the Middle East?

Yes — Spain exports significant volumes of sunflower oil (both standard RBD and high-oleic) to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, and GCC markets. Spanish exporters typically hold Halal certification for these markets. As an EU member, Spanish sunflower oil benefits from EU-Morocco and EU-Tunisia Association Agreement preferential tariff rates in North African markets.

When is Spanish sunflower oil available as new crop?

Spanish sunflower is harvested in September–October. New crop sunflower oil from Spanish origin is typically available by November–December, with ex-works or ex-tank availability. Spanish harvest size significantly affects EU sunflower oil prices — a poor Spanish harvest adds support to European prices, while a bumper crop can suppress them.
