Ukraine, Russia, Argentina, and the EU are the primary export origins, though supply from Ukraine and Russia has been disrupted since 2022, pushing buyers toward Argentine and EU alternatives. For wholesale procurement the key decision is grade and oil type. Refined, bleached, and deodorized (RBD) sunflower oil is the standard for food service and retail, with free fatty acids (FFA) below 0.1% and moisture below 0.05%. High-oleic sunflower oil — containing 80%+ oleic acid — offers significantly superior heat stability, extending industrial fryer life by two to three times compared to standard high-linoleic grades, and is preferred by QSRs and snack manufacturers. It commands a 15–25% price premium. Bulk packaging options include 200-litre steel drums, 1,000-litre IBCs, flexitanks (22,000–24,000 litres per 20ft container), and ISO tanks. Most suppliers require a minimum of one FCL.
What to verify before placing a wholesale sunflower oil order
Before finalising a wholesale sunflower oil contract, request a Certificate of Analysis confirming FFA, peroxide value (PV), moisture content, colour (Lovibond scale), and iodine value. Certifications to verify include HACCP, ISO 22000, and Halal or Kosher where required. EU and UK buyers must confirm compliance with EU Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008 and applicable food labelling rules. For high-oleic grades used in industrial frying, request written confirmation of the oleic acid percentage. Always review SGS or Intertek pre-shipment inspection certificates, and confirm payment terms — typically 30% TT advance with 70% against Bill of Lading copy, or Letter of Credit at sight — along with lead times from the supplier's origin.
