Rigid plastic packaging is produced primarily from four resins: PET (polyethylene terephthalate), HDPE (high-density polyethylene), PP (polypropylene), and PS (polystyrene). PET dominates in clear bottles for beverages, cooking oils, and condiments — valued for its clarity, mechanical strength, barrier properties to oxygen and CO₂, and recyclability. HDPE is preferred for opaque bottles, jerry cans, and containers used with edible oils, household chemicals, and personal care products — offering good chemical resistance, excellent ESCR (environmental stress crack resistance), and food contact compliance. PP is the material of choice for snap-lid containers, food trays, and jars where clarity is less critical but temperature resistance is important (PP is microwave-safe, HDPE is not). PS (polystyrene) is used in clamshells and some food service containers but faces increasing regulatory pressure due to poor recyclability. Selection between these materials depends on the specific product, required shelf life, filling temperature, closure type, and destination market regulations. For EU markets, the PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) is introducing recyclability requirements and recycled content mandates for plastic packaging — rPET and rHDPE certified recycled-content packaging is increasingly demanded by major retailers.
