Rice milling converts paddy rice (unhusked rice) into milled white rice through a defined sequence of operations. Pre-cleaning removes stones, straw, dust, and foreign matter using a vibrating cleaner, aspirator, and destoner — this is critical because stones entering the huller cause major damage. Hulling removes the outer husk from the paddy using rubber-roll hullers (the standard for modern commercial mills) or steel-disc hullers. Husk aspiration removes the separated husk. Paddy separation uses a paddy separator (indent cylinder or gravity table) to separate unhusked paddy that passed through the huller from hulled brown rice, returning the paddy to the huller. Whitening (milling) removes the bran layers from brown rice using abrasive (emery-roll) or friction whiteners to produce white milled rice. Polishing applies a final light polish to the white rice to improve lustre and appearance. Grading sifts the milled rice to separate head rice from broken rice.
