Grain destoners (specific gravity separators or aspirator destoners) separate stones, soil lumps, glass, and dense foreign material from grain before milling. Harvested grain — particularly grain from developing markets with mechanical or manual harvesting at ground level — can contain stones and hard foreign material of similar size to the grain kernel. Stones entering a roller mill or hammer mill cause severe damage to the rolls or hammer tips and screens, resulting in costly downtime and repair. Destoning is therefore a critical step in the pre-cleaning section of any grain mill, and destoner damage to machinery is a leading cause of preventable mill downtime. A gravity destoner consists of a vibrating inclined deck through which air is blown upward. Light grain particles rise and move up the deck (toward the discharge); dense stones and heavy material settle on the deck surface and move down toward the stone discharge. The deck angle, vibration frequency, and air velocity are adjusted for the specific grain type and stone density.
Frequently asked questions
What other cleaning equipment should be combined with a grain destoner?
A complete grain cleaning section typically includes multiple machines in sequence: a pre-cleaner (scalperator or rotary screen) to remove large foreign matter (straw, sticks, large stones) and fine dust before the destoner; a magnetic separator to remove ferrous metal (tramp iron, wire) that would damage or contaminate downstream equipment; the destoner (specific gravity separator) to remove stones and dense material; and, for wheat milling, a scourer (emery roll machine) to abrade surface bran and soil from the grain before conditioning. Each machine removes a different class of impurity — all are needed for thorough cleaning.
How is a destoner adjusted for different grain types?
The main adjustments on a gravity destoner are the deck inclination angle, the vibration intensity and frequency, and the air velocity through the deck. Heavier grain (wheat, maize) typically requires slightly different settings than lighter grain (millet, rice). Suppliers provide starting-point settings for common grain types, but final adjustment should be done on-site with your actual grain at normal moisture content. The effectiveness of the separation should be verified by checking the stone discharge for grain carry-over (grain lost with the stones) and the grain discharge for residual stones. A well-adjusted destoner should separate stones with minimal grain loss.
