Kano has been a commercial city for many centuries. It grew as one of the southern ends of the caravan routes that crossed the Sahara, exchanging cloth, leather, grain and kola for salt and manufactured goods, and its merchants built trading networks that still reach across the Sahel. The railway and later the road network tied the city to Lagos and the ports, and the groundnut trade of the last century made it the collecting point for northern farm produce. Today Kano is among the most populous cities in the country, with a large consumer market of its own, industrial estates producing food, plastics, textiles and leather, and an international airport. What matters for a buyer is that goods flow through Kano in both directions. Imported and southern-made goods arrive from Lagos, Onitsha and Aba and are distributed onwards across the north, while grains, pulses, oilseeds, livestock and hides are collected from the northern farming states and sold south or exported. Kano's wholesalers are therefore used to selling in volume to buyers who have travelled long distances, and much of the trade is conducted in Hausa, on relationships built over many years and often across generations.
