Wholesale Suppliers in Ibadan: Where to Buy by Product

Ibadan is the capital of Oyo State and one of the largest cities in Nigeria by both population and area. It grew as a Yoruba trading and administrative centre, and it remains the commercial hub of the inland south-west, serving Oyo, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti and parts of Kwara and Ogun States.

Geography explains its role. Ibadan sits on the main road from Lagos to the north, and the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the standard-gauge railway both connect it to Lagos and its ports. Imported and factory-made goods come up from Lagos, farm produce comes down from the middle belt and the north, and the farms of Oyo State itself supply yams, cassava, maize, vegetables and tree crops. Ibadan is where those flows meet, which is why it is strong in foodstuffs above all.

For a business owner in the south-west, Ibadan is often a better place to buy than Lagos. Prices on imported goods are a little higher, because they carry the haulage from Lagos, but the markets are easier to reach, traffic and handling costs are lower, and for foodstuffs Ibadan is frequently the cheaper source.

Bodija Market is the largest foodstuff market in Ibadan and one of the most important in the south-west. It deals in the dry staples of the Nigerian kitchen: rice, beans, maize, millet, guinea corn, garri, yam flour, cassava flour, dried pepper, melon seed, groundnuts, palm oil and vegetable oil, together with yams, onions and fresh produce. Goods are sold by the bag, the basin, the keg and the truckload.

Supply comes from two directions. Trucks bring beans, grains, onions and dried pepper from the northern states, while farmers and aggregators from Oyo State and its neighbours bring yams, cassava products and palm oil. Caterers, food sellers, schools, retailers and market women from across the south-west buy there, and many Lagos buyers use Bodija to avoid the congestion of the Lagos markets.

Trade is organised in commodity sections, each with its own association and its own established sellers. Prices move with the season and with the arrival of trucks, so ask several sellers on the day. Check that measures and bag weights are what they are said to be, open bags from inside the stack, and look for damp, weevils and stones. Bodija also has a well-known timber and plank market alongside the food trade.

Fresh tomatoes, peppers and onions follow their own route. Sasa Market, in the Akinyele area on the northern side of the city, is the main arrival point for perishable produce trucked down from the north, and it plays a role for Ibadan similar to the one Mile 12 plays for Lagos. Produce is sold by the basket and the bag, very early in the day, through commission agents who link the northern suppliers with local buyers. Restaurants, caterers and neighbourhood market sellers who need tomatoes and peppers regularly do best by building a relationship with one or two agents there.

In the old core of the city, Oja-Oba and the markets around it remain important for traditional foodstuffs, locally produced goods and herbal and cultural items. Oje Market is known for aso-oke, the hand-woven Yoruba cloth, and traders from other towns come to buy it on its periodic market days.

Gbagi is to Ibadan what Balogun is to Lagos. The old Gbagi market stood in the Dugbe area in the centre of the city, and the textile trade was later moved to a large purpose-built market on the eastern side of Ibadan, formally named the Bola Ige International Market and known to everyone as New Gbagi.

Traders there sell ankara prints, lace, guinea brocade, plain and suiting fabrics, aso-oke, headties, ready-made clothing, shoes, bags, curtains and household textiles. Much of the stock is bought from importers in Lagos and from Kano, and the larger Gbagi merchants import for themselves. Fabrics are sold by the yard, the piece and the bundle, and prices are negotiated shop by shop.

For tailors, fashion businesses, uniform makers and clothing retailers across Oyo, Osun and the neighbouring states, Gbagi saves a trip to Lagos. Demand and prices rise ahead of the main festive periods and the wedding season. As with any fabric market, check the length of each piece, look at the cloth in daylight, learn the brand names and grades in your line, and compare several shops before you settle.

The centre of Ibadan holds a group of markets that together cover most other wholesale needs.

• Agbeni is the provisions market. Its traders sell packaged foods, beverages, confectionery, seasoning, toiletries, detergents and other fast-moving consumer goods by the carton, and many are distributors or sub-distributors for the manufacturers. Shop owners and supermarkets across the city restock there.
• Ogunpa, beside Dugbe, is a general goods market for clothing, shoes, bags, household wares, plastics, small electrical items and a wide range of imported merchandise.
• Dugbe is the city's main commercial district, where banks, company offices and transport links sit among shops selling clothing and general goods.
• Aleshinloye is a more orderly, purpose-built market of lock-up shops selling fabrics, clothing, shoes, jewellery, gift items, household goods and furniture, at both wholesale and retail.

Ibadan is also an industrial city, with food, beverage, feed and consumer goods manufacturers operating in and around it, notably around the Oluyole area and along the Lagos road. Several of them maintain depots and appoint distributors locally, so if you sell branded consumer goods, ask the manufacturer's sales office who serves your area.

Whether to buy in Ibadan or travel on to Lagos is a calculation. For foodstuffs, Ibadan is usually the better source for buyers in the south-west. For imported goods such as electronics, phones, auto parts and much general merchandise, the Ibadan price includes a Lagos wholesaler's margin and the haulage, so larger buyers go to the Lagos markets or to importers directly.

Set the price difference against the cost of the trip: transport, time away from the business, loading, and the risk of loss in transit. For small and frequent purchases Ibadan wins. For large orders of higher-value goods, Lagos often pays. Many Ibadan traders do both, visiting Lagos occasionally to agree terms with an importer and reordering by phone, with goods sent up by road.

Yoruba is the everyday language of the Ibadan markets, and although English and pidgin will get you through, going with someone who speaks Yoruba helps with both price and goodwill. Relationships count, and regular customers get better prices and first call on scarce stock.

Apply the same discipline in Ibadan as anywhere else. For any order that matters, ask for the registered business name and confirm it on the Corporate Affairs Commission public search, and check that the bank account you are paying carries that name. For packaged food, drinks and cosmetics, check the NAFDAC registration number and the expiry date. Buy from a shop with a fixed place in the market, inspect before paying, and collect a receipt listing the items and quantities. If a dispute arises, the market association for that line is the first place to take it.

Bank transfer is the usual means of payment, with cash and point-of-sale terminals also in use. Within the city, goods are moved by barrow pushers, small pick-ups and mini trucks, and transport companies and haulage operators run from Ibadan to every part of the south-west and beyond.
