Turkey occupies a dual role in the global sunflower oil trade: as a domestic producer from the Thrace region (European Turkey) and as a strategic processing and re-export hub for Black Sea origin crude and refined sunflower oil destined for Middle Eastern, African, and South Asian markets.
Domestic production: Turkish sunflower cultivation is concentrated in the Thrace region — the provinces of Edirne, Tekirdağ, Kırklareli, and Çanakkale — which produces the majority of Turkey's sunflower seed crop. Annual domestic crush capacity is approximately 1.5–2.0 million tonnes of sunflower seed, yielding approximately 600,000–800,000 tonnes of crude sunflower oil. Turkey is a net importer of sunflower seed and crude oil in years where domestic production is insufficient to meet refinery capacity, sourcing from Ukraine and Russia.
