Intrinsic viscosity (IV), measured in dl/g, is the most important specification for bottle-grade PET resin. IV reflects the molecular weight and chain length of the polymer — higher IV means higher molecular weight, greater melt strength, and better mechanical performance in the finished bottle. The standard IV range for PET bottle resin is 0.72–0.86 dl/g. Water and still beverage bottles (single-use, lower pressure resistance required): 0.72–0.78 dl/g. Carbonated soft drinks (CSD) bottles (must withstand internal CO2 pressure): 0.78–0.84 dl/g. Hot-fill bottles (must resist distortion at filling temperatures): 0.80–0.86 dl/g. Large bottles (5L and above): higher IV (0.80–0.86 dl/g) for adequate melt strength during blow moulding. Specifying the wrong IV for your preform and blow moulding process results in inconsistent wall thickness distribution, haze, and bottle failure. Always confirm the IV specification with your preform toolmaker and blow moulding machine supplier.
Colour, brightness, and additives in bottle PET
PET bottle resin quality is also assessed by colour (expressed as L*, a*, b* in the CIELAB colour space) and brightness. For clear beverage bottles, very low b* (yellowness) values are required — typically b* below 2.0 for premium water bottles; up to 3.5 for standard grades. Haze and clarity depend on the SSP (solid state polycondensation) process quality. Standard bottle-grade PET contains acetaldehyde (AA) scavengers, since acetaldehyde is generated during melt processing and adversely affects the taste of water and sensitive beverages at levels above 10 ppb. For water packaging, specify a low-AA grade or an AA-scavenger-containing grade and request the AA content specification. Antimony-based (Sb2O3) catalysts are standard; antimony-free PET (using titanium or germanium catalysts) is available and required for certain market preferences and food contact regulations.
