Shrink sleeve labels are pre-printed tubular film sleeves that are applied over a container and then shrunk tightly to the container profile by passing through a steam or hot-air shrink tunnel. The sleeve conforms to complex container shapes — including hourglass, tapered, and embossed profiles — enabling 360-degree print coverage that a self-adhesive label cannot achieve. The three primary shrink sleeve materials are PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified), and OPS (oriented polystyrene). PVC sleeves are the lowest-cost option with a high shrink ratio (up to 70% transverse direction), making them suitable for highly contoured containers; however, PVC is increasingly disfavoured for recyclability reasons as it contaminates PET container recycling streams and is not compatible with most European and US EPR scheme requirements. PETG sleeves are the premium alternative to PVC — offering similar or better shrink performance (50–70% TD shrink), excellent print quality, good clarity, and compatibility with PET container recycling streams (PETG separates from PET in the float-sink flotation stage of PET recycling). OPS (oriented polystyrene) sleeves offer moderate shrink (40–55% TD), good stiffness, and clear, bright print reproduction — commonly used for beverage bottles and dairy containers. When selecting sleeve material, confirm compatibility with your shrink tunnel type (steam tunnel, hot-air tunnel, or infrared tunnel) and the container substrate — some container materials require temperature-controlled tunnelling to prevent deformation.
