RSPO-Palmöl-Lieferanten finden →RSPO certification: the four supply chain models explained
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is the primary international certification standard for sustainable palm oil. RSPO certification operates at two levels: (1) grower/mill certification confirming the palm oil comes from farms meeting RSPO's Principles and Criteria (P&C) on land rights, environmental protection, labour standards, and traceability; and (2) supply chain certification (SCC) at each link in the supply chain (processor, trader, refiner, buyer) confirming the certified palm oil is appropriately tracked or segregated. The RSPO offers four supply chain models, each representing a different level of physical traceability and segregation: **1. Identity Preserved (IP):** The highest traceability standard — certified palm oil from a single certified mill/plantation is kept physically separate and uniquely identifiable throughout the entire supply chain to the final buyer. IP certification guarantees the specific mill of origin. Most costly to implement and limited in scale — typically relevant for premium brands requiring single-origin sustainability narrative. Very small proportion of RSPO total volume. **2. Segregated (SG):** Certified palm oil from multiple RSPO-certified sources is kept physically separate from non-certified palm oil throughout the supply chain — all the way to the final buyer. Mixing of different RSPO-certified sources is permitted, but no mixing with non-certified material occurs. Provides physical assurance of 100% RSPO-certified content. EU and UK retailers with premium sustainability positioning typically require Segregated or IP. **3. Mass Balance (MB):** The most commercially common RSPO model. Certified and non-certified palm oil is mixed in the physical supply chain (e.g., in tanks, during transport), but the volume of certified palm oil purchased ('credits') must match or exceed the volume of certified product sold. A refinery or processor purchases RSPO-certified CPO, mixes it with non-certified CPO in its refining operations, but sells a matched volume as 'RSPO Mass Balance' certified. The physical product is not guaranteed to contain certified molecules, but the overall system increases demand for certified farms. Widely accepted in most EU/UK food manufacturing supply chains. **4. Book and Claim (B&C) / RSPO Credits:** The decoupling model — buyers purchase 'credits' (Impact Certificates) representing certified production from certified farmers, independent of the physical supply chain. No physical change to the supply chain is required. Provides a financial contribution to certified farming without supply chain integration. Least recognised for strong sustainability claims — typically used as a supplementary mechanism or by buyers who cannot switch physical supply chains to RSPO certified material.
