Plastic film is mechanically very different from rigid plastic — it is light, flexible, and tends to tangle and wrap around rotating machinery. Standard crushing equipment designed for rigid plastic will jam when processing film. Film-specific recycling plants use wet granulators that cut film in water to prevent wrapping, and friction washers with specific internal clearances and rotor designs suited to film flake. The low bulk density of film flake (approximately 20–80 kg/m³ for loose flake vs 300–500 kg/m³ for rigid plastic) means that conveyors, storage silos, and dryers must be sized much larger in volume terms than a rigid line of equivalent throughput by weight. PP film and PE film (LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE film) are both recovered through similar processing routes but have different melting points and processing temperatures — confirm with the plant supplier whether the line is designed for PP, PE, or mixed PP/PE input, as the extruder screw and barrel specification differs.

PP/PE film recycling plants process three main input streams, each with distinct characteristics. Post-industrial PP/PE film waste (trim rolls, off-specification production, wrapping film from logistics operations) is the cleanest and easiest to process — minimal soil or food contamination, consistent composition, suitable for standard friction-wash systems without hot wash. Post-consumer LLDPE/LDPE stretch wrap and shrink film from supermarkets, retail distribution, and industrial users is moderately contaminated — labels, tape, and food residues typically require a friction wash and rinse but may not need hot wash. Agricultural plastic film (mulch film, silage film, tunnel film) is the most challenging — heavily contaminated with soil, sand, and organic matter. Agricultural film lines require a pre-wash drum or trommel, multiple friction washing stages, hot wash capability, and a high-capacity water treatment system. Agricultural film lines typically see 20–40% weight loss of input as contamination removed during washing.
