Not all plastic buckets sold as heavy-duty meet the same standard. When sourcing in bulk, specify the following: Capacity (litres): standard B2B sizes are 5L, 10L, 15L, 20L, and 25L. Wall thickness: heavy-duty 10L buckets for industrial use typically have a side wall thickness of 2.5–3.5mm; economy grade is 1.8–2.5mm. Material: PP (polypropylene) is standard for most applications — food-grade approved, impact-resistant, available in any colour. HDPE is used where greater chemical resistance or low-temperature flexibility is needed. Virgin material vs recycled content: for food and chemical contact, virgin PP is required. Stacking rings and base design: heavy-duty buckets typically have reinforced stacking ribs and a robust base — confirm with your specific application (outdoor stacking, forklift handling). Handle type: metal wire bail handles (more durable), plastic handles, or no handle for lidded pails. Lid type: snap-on (friction-fit), screw lid, lever-off lid (tamper-evident), or no lid. For food and chemical applications, confirm lid sealing performance.
Food-grade requirements and applications
For buckets used to store or transport food products — edible oil, dairy, agricultural produce, beverages, food ingredients — the bucket and lid must be food-contact approved. Request the Declaration of Compliance confirming EU Regulation 10/2011 (for EU buyers) or FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 (for US buyers) compliance for the specific PP or HDPE grade used. The coloured pigments in non-white buckets must also be food-contact approved. For potable water storage, NSF 61 compliance is required in North America; equivalent national approvals apply in other markets. Construction buckets, agricultural chemical buckets, and paint buckets do not require food-contact approval but should be clearly segregated from food-use buckets in purchasing and storage to prevent cross-use.
