An isobaric filler (also called a counter-pressure filler or iso-pressure filler) fills carbonated beverages without losing CO₂ by equalising the pressure inside the container with the pressure in the product tank before filling begins. The filling sequence is: the container is sealed against the filling valve; CO₂ gas is injected into the container to bring it to filling pressure; the filling valve opens and product flows from the pressurised product tank into the pressurised container; when full, the filling valve closes and excess CO₂ is gradually released. This counter-pressure process prevents CO₂ from escaping during filling, maintaining beverage carbonation level. Isobaric filling is required for all carbonated beverages: carbonated soft drinks (CSD) — colas, lemonades, energy drinks, flavoured waters; beer and lager — from low-carbonation ales to highly carbonated lagers; sparkling water — both still-carbonated and naturally sparkling sources; cider — carbonated fruit-based beverages; sparkling wine, champagne, and prosecco — where bottling under pressure is required. For non-carbonated still beverages (juice, water, sports drinks, dairy), gravity, piston, or flow-meter fillers are used instead. The carbonation level (measured in volumes of CO₂ or grams per litre) determines the required filling pressure, which must be matched to the filler specification.
