Heat sealing joins thermoplastic packaging materials by applying controlled heat and pressure to the seal area, melting and fusing the polymer layers together. The main heat sealing technologies used in packaging are: impulse sealing — a thin resistance wire is momentarily heated by an electrical impulse when pressed against the packaging material; the wire heats and cools within each sealing cycle; suitable for PE and PP films and laminates up to medium gauge; standard for table-top bag sealers, foot-operated sealers, and semi-automatic sachet and pouch sealers; low running cost as the element only heats when sealing. Constant-heat sealing — a continuously heated jaw applies heat for a set dwell time; suitable for thicker films, foil laminates, and materials requiring a longer heat dwell; used on some tray sealers, form-fill-seal machines, and carton sealers. Band sealing — the packaging material passes between two moving heated belts; the belt speed controls the dwell time at temperature; suitable for continuous high-speed sealing of filled pouches and bags; standard for automated pouch lines, vertical bag filling lines, and food packaging. Ultrasonic sealing — high-frequency vibration generates friction heat at the seal interface; suitable for difficult-to-seal materials (foil laminates, coated papers) and for sealing through contaminated (product-smeared) seal areas. Film material compatibility is critical: PE and LDPE films (bread bags, produce bags, freezer bags) are the easiest to seal with impulse or band sealing. PP films require a higher seal temperature than PE. PA/PE (nylon/PE) laminates require specific seal temperature and pressure settings. Aluminium foil laminates require careful temperature control to prevent delamination. BOPP (oriented polypropylene, crisp and snack bags) requires a heated jaw at the correct temperature range.

Continuous band sealers are the standard semi-automatic and automatic heat sealing machines for food, medical, and general packaging. A continuous band sealer consists of two parallel heated conveyor belts that grip the open top of a filled bag, carry it through a heated sealing zone, then through a cooling zone, and discharge the sealed bag. Horizontal band sealers (for upright filled bags) and vertical band sealers (for large flat bags laid on a conveyor) are available. Many band sealers include a date-coding printer or ribbon-transfer coder integrated into the sealing head, printing a batch code, best-before date, or lot number onto the seal area in the same pass. Fill speeds on band sealers range from 3–12 metres per minute of seal travel — equivalent to 20–100+ bags per minute depending on bag length. Integration: band sealers are installed at the end of a filling line (after the filler, before or after a checkweigher or metal detector). For fully automated lines, the band sealer is fed automatically from the upstream filler with no operator involvement. When sourcing, specify: film material and thickness, bag width (determines sealing belt width), required seal speed, whether date coding is required, horizontal or vertical feed orientation, whether a two-stage sealing and cooling section is required, and whether the machine needs to be food-grade (stainless steel construction).
