The terms 'rapeseed' and 'canola' are often used interchangeably but carry specific technical meaning. Traditional rapeseed contained high levels of erucic acid (a long-chain fatty acid, 20–50% of total fatty acids) and glucosinolates — both of which are undesirable for human food and animal feed use. Modern 'canola' varieties were developed in Canada in the 1970s through conventional breeding to contain: erucic acid ≤2% of total fatty acids (Codex standard for canola oil); and glucosinolates ≤30 µmol/g seed (air-dry basis). These are the defining parameters for the 'double-zero' or '00' designation widely used in European markets. The Codex Alimentarius standard for canola oil (Codex STAN 210-1999) requires erucic acid ≤2%. EU Regulation (EU) 2019/1381 restricts erucic acid in vegetable oils for food use to ≤20 g/kg (2%) and in fat-containing foods accordingly. Buyers should always confirm that rapeseed/canola shipments for food or feed use carry laboratory analysis confirming erucic acid ≤2% and glucosinolate content within contract specification.
