Alcohols: IPA (isopropanol 99.8%+) for electronics cleaning, disinfection, pharmaceutical formulation; ethanol (anhydrous 99.9%, denatured industrial) for coatings and extractions; methanol for chemical synthesis and biodiesel; n-butanol and isobutanol for coating solvents. Ketones: acetone for cleaning and acetylene dissolution; MEK for adhesives, coatings, and magnetic tape; MIBK for extraction and coatings. Esters: ethyl acetate and butyl acetate for flexible packaging printing inks and nail coatings. Aromatics: toluene for thinning and extraction; xylene isomers (o, m, p) and mixed xylenes for coatings and resin synthesis. Glycol ethers: PGMEA (propylene glycol methyl ether acetate) for semiconductor photoresist processing; PM acetate for automotive coatings.

Several solvent classes face REACH restrictions. SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern) solvents on the Candidate List or Authorisation List: DMF (dimethylformamide — CMR reprotoxic, REACH Annex XIV); NMP (N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone — CMR reprotoxic, concentration limited); DCM (dichloromethane — SVHC candidate); 1,2-dichloroethane (CMR). Substitution alternatives: NMP → NBP (n-butyl pyrrolidone), GBL (gamma-butyrolactone), or NEP (n-ethyl pyrrolidone); DMF → DMI (dimethyl isosorbide) or triethyl citrate; DCM → methylal (dimethoxymethane) or propylene glycol diacetate. Suppliers should provide REACH authorisation reference numbers for SVHC solvent supply to EU customers.

Most common industrial solvents are classified as GHS Class 3 Flammable Liquids, categorised by flash point: Category 1 (<23°C, bp <35°C — diethyl ether); Category 2 (<23°C, bp >35°C — acetone, IPA, methanol, toluene, MEK, ethyl acetate); Category 3 (≥23°C and ≤60°C — n-butanol, xylene, MIBK). Transport: UN numbers (e.g. UN 1090 Acetone, UN 1219 Isopropanol), proper shipping name, packing groups. ADR by road requires orange plates and hazmat driver certification; IMDG for sea requires segregation from oxidisers and flammable solids; IATA restricts quantities per package. Always transport in UN-approved containers.

Flammable solvent storage areas must comply with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU (equipment) and 1999/92/EC (workplace health and safety). Zone classification: Zone 0 (explosive atmosphere continuously present — inside tanks); Zone 1 (occasionally present — 1 metre around tank vents); Zone 2 (rarely present — up to 3 metres from Zone 1 boundaries). Storage requirements: earthing and bonding to prevent static discharge; explosion-proof electrical equipment (IIC Group for most solvents); ventilation design to keep solvent vapour below 25% of LEL; sprinkler or foam deluge systems; secondary containment bunds ≥110% of largest tank volume.

Industrial solvents are available in multiple purity grades: Technical/Commercial grade (99.0–99.5% typical) for cleaning, coatings; Reagent grade (99.5–99.9%) for laboratory and pharmaceutical formulation; USP/BP grade for pharmaceutical manufacturing (pharmacopoeial testing required); Electronic/Semiconductor grade (99.99%+, ultra-low metals and particle counts) for wafer cleaning and photoresist. Packaging: 200 L steel drums (standard industrial), 1,000 L IBC totes, 20,000 L ISO tankers (T3 or T11 for most solvents), rail cars for commodity volumes. Request Certificate of Analysis (CoA) with GC purity, water content (Karl Fischer), and metal/particulate data for electronic-grade material.
