Ivory Coast produces approximately 500,000–600,000 tonnes of palm oil annually, making it Africa's largest palm oil producer and the fourth-largest globally outside of Southeast Asia and Latin America. The Ivorian oil palm sector has deep historical roots — Ivory Coast was one of the first West African countries to develop industrial oil palm cultivation under SODEPALM (Société pour le Développement du Palmier à Huile, a government company created in 1969) during the Houphouët-Boigny era. The industry is concentrated in the southern forest belt of Ivory Coast — the primary producing regions are Aboisso, Abengourou, and Adzopé in the southeast; Agboville, Divo, and Tiassalé in the south-central zone; and Soubré and Gagnoa in the southwest. The main industrial palm oil companies operating in Ivory Coast: PALMCI (Palmier de Côte d'Ivoire) — the largest palm oil company in Ivory Coast and a subsidiary of the Sime Darby Plantation group (Malaysia); PALMCI manages over 26,000 ha of company-operated estate and approximately 25,000 ha of smallholder/outgrower (planteurs villageois) oil palm managed through its supply chain; PALMCI's main refinery at Abidjan (Vridi) produces RBD palm products for domestic and export markets; SANIA (Société Africaine de Noix et d'Amandes Industrielles) — a Wilmar International subsidiary based in Abidjan, one of Ivory Coast's largest palm oil and palm kernel refineries, significant exporter; SOGB (Société de Caoutchoucs de Grand Bereby) — part of SIFCA Group (Société Ivoirienne de Financement et de Capitaux Agricoles), operates approximately 9,000 ha of oil palm alongside natural rubber; Trituraf Société (Wilmar-related) — processes palm kernels for PKO production; SIPEF NV (Belgian agribusiness group) — operates small oil palm estates in Ivory Coast alongside its Indonesian operations. Smallholder production is significant — approximately 60–70% of Ivorian palm oil production comes from independent smallholders (planteurs individuels) and cooperative-organised farmers, many of whom supply to PALMCI's certified supplier network.
