Spice cleaning equipment — types and applications

Incoming dried spices and herbs typically contain foreign material including: stones and heavy dense material (sand, gravel, dried mud clumps); light material (stems, straw, husks, dust); and metal fragments. Cleaning equipment to remove these contaminants before grinding includes: vibrating flat screens (remove oversize material — large stems, straw, and other items that sit on top of the screen; and undersize fine material — dust, sand — that falls through; the spice is retained in the middle fractions); air classifiers and aspiration systems (a controlled air stream separates light material — empty seeds, dust, light stems — from heavier, denser spice material); destoners (separate dense, heavy material — small stones, glass fragments, dense seeds — from the spice material using a combination of air and vibration; stones and dense material report to one discharge and the cleaned spice to another); magnetic separators and metal detectors (remove ferromagnetic fragments — essential before grinding, as metal fragments cause severe damage to grinder screens and blades); and optical colour sorters (remove discoloured, mouldy, and off-colour spice material — see separate colour sorter page).
