Grain cleaning is the first and most critical stage in any grain processing facility. Uncleaned grain contains foreign material (stones, soil clods, straw, chaff, weed seeds, metallic contaminants, and dust) that damages downstream milling equipment, contaminates finished products, and in the case of mycotoxin-contaminated kernels, represents a food safety risk. A complete grain cleaning train typically includes: a pre-cleaner (coarse vibrating or rotary screen) to remove large foreign matter and fine dust before storage or milling; a destoner (gravity destoner or specific-gravity stone separator) to remove stones and dense foreign matter that are the same size as grain; an aspirator to remove light contaminants (husks, chaff, straw, and dust) by air classification; a magnetic separator (drum or plate magnets) to capture metallic debris; and a grain scourer (abrasive cylinder or emery roll) to clean the grain surface and remove adhered dust, fungal spores, and superficial contamination. For cereal mills, a trieur (indent cylinder separator) may also be used to separate long and short foreign seeds from the grain.
