What is the difference between cold-press and hot-press oil extraction?
Cold pressing extracts oil from seeds at temperatures typically below 50°C, without pre-heating the seed. The resulting oil retains more natural tocopherols, phytosterols, and flavour compounds, commands a premium in health-conscious markets, and does not require refining for many applications. Cold-press extraction yields are lower than hot-press — typically 60–80% of available oil is extracted, leaving more oil in the residual cake. Hot pressing pre-heats and conditions the seed to above 80–100°C before pressing, improving cell rupture and oil yield significantly. Hot-pressed crude oil typically requires refining to remove heat-generated off-flavours and colour bodies. The choice depends on the target product and market positioning.
Do I need a full refinery, or can I sell crude oil?
Whether you need refining depends on the oilseed type, your target market, and the intended use. Virgin coconut oil and cold-pressed groundnut oil can often be sold without refining for premium food applications if FFA and peroxide levels are within specification. However, crude sunflower oil, soybean oil, and palm oil — particularly hot-pressed — almost always require degumming and at minimum FFA reduction before they meet food-grade specifications. Full RBD refining is required for neutral-flavoured, shelf-stable cooking oil sold in consumer packaging. Check your target market's food regulations and your buyers' oil quality specifications before deciding whether to invest in partial or full refining capacity.
Is solvent extraction safe for a small-scale operation?
Solvent extraction using hexane is a standard industrial process, but it requires significant capital investment in explosion-proof (ATEX-rated) equipment, solvent recovery and vapour capture systems, and fire and explosion safety measures. It is generally not economical or safe at small scale (under approximately 50 tonnes per day seed input) without the appropriate infrastructure and engineering expertise. Small-scale operators are generally better served by mechanical pressing. If solvent extraction is under consideration, involve a qualified process safety engineer in the design review before purchasing any equipment.
