Lollipop production begins with hard candy cooking (the same sugar cooking process as other hard candy types — see Candy Making Machines), followed by colour and flavour addition. The cooked, conditioned candy mass is then formed into the lollipop shape and a stick is inserted. The main lollipop forming approaches are: rope-and-die forming with stick insertion (the candy rope is cut and a die stamps the piece into a round or shape; a stick inserter places the stick simultaneously or immediately after forming); rotary lollipop machines (a rotating plate with mould cavities positions the candy and stick in a coordinated sequence — used in high-throughput continuous lollipop lines); and depositor-type machines (for filled or layered lollipop products). After forming, lollipops are cooled on a cooling conveyor and then individually wrapped in twist-wrap or pillow-pack wrapping machines. Stick feeding, orientation, and insertion are critical mechanical steps — stick feeder mechanisms must reliably orient sticks and insert them to a consistent depth at the production speed of the line.
Frequently asked questions
What stick materials are used for lollipops?
Lollipop sticks are made from several materials: paper sticks (the most common material, widely used in Europe and increasingly globally as a replacement for plastic sticks; biodegradable and renewable; white or natural kraft; must have sufficient rigidity for the lollipop weight); plastic sticks (polypropylene — durable, resistant to moisture, recyclable; increasingly restricted by single-use plastics regulations in the EU and UK for candy product sticks since the Single-Use Plastics Directive); wood sticks (birch or poplar wood sticks — natural and biodegradable; used for ice lollies and some confectionery; heavier than paper). The choice of stick material must be validated for compatibility with the lollipop machine's stick feeder — not all feeders handle all stick materials without adjustment.
Can I produce filled lollipops on the same machine as solid lollipops?
Filled lollipops (hard candy lollipop with a soft or liquid centre) require a co-extrusion or injection step to introduce the filling into the candy mass before forming. This is a different machine configuration from solid lollipop production. Some manufacturer machines offer both solid and filled capabilities with a changeover, but this is not universal. If filled lollipops are in your product range, confirm this is supported by the machine at the time of purchase. Different filling types (liquid, soft candy, powder, chocolate) also require different filling equipment and may require different process approaches — clarify the full product range with the supplier before selecting equipment.
