A retort pouch is a flexible packaging format designed to withstand the high temperatures (typically 121°C–135°C) and pressures of industrial autoclave sterilisation — enabling shelf-stable packaging of fully cooked foods without refrigeration. Retort processing is equivalent to canning: the pouch and its contents are heated in a pressurised retort to achieve the required F0 value (a measure of total lethal heat treatment) sufficient to destroy Clostridium botulinum spores. The standard retort pouch laminate is PET/aluminium foil/CPP — PET as the outer structural and print layer, aluminium foil as the oxygen and light barrier, and cast polypropylene (CPP) as the heat-seal inner layer. CPP is specified (rather than PE) because it withstands retort temperatures without delamination or seal failure. Transparent retort pouches use a PET/BOPP/CPP or BOPP/nylon/CPP structure with EVOH barrier in place of aluminium foil — allowing product visibility but with lower barrier performance than foil structures. Retort pouches must be heat-sealed with sufficient seal strength to survive pressurised autoclave conditions; seal integrity testing (burst testing and peel testing per supplier specification) is required before production approval. All retort pouch manufacturers supplying food applications must hold BRC Global Standard for Packaging Materials or equivalent GFSI certification and provide a Declaration of Compliance for the laminate structure.
