Industrial food washing machines — types and applications

Food washing removes surface contamination (soil, pesticide residues, microorganisms) from the product before further processing or packing. The main industrial food washing machine types include: bubble (flotation) washers (air is bubbled through a water bath containing the product — the agitation cleans the product surface; suitable for leafy vegetables, herbs, and products that float; stones and heavy material sink to the bottom and are removed); spray washers (high-pressure water sprays are directed at the product on a conveyor belt — effective for root vegetables, firm fruits, and products where surface dirt must be removed by direct water pressure); drum washers (product tumbles inside a slowly rotating perforated drum through which water is sprayed — suitable for robust root vegetables, potatoes, and small hard fruit); and ultrasonic washers (ultrasonic transducers generate high-frequency pressure waves in the water bath — creates microscopic cavitation that removes fine surface contamination; suitable for herbs, berries, and high-value products where gentle but thorough cleaning is required).
