Recyclable mono-material packaging is packaging constructed from a single polymer family — ensuring it can be sorted into a single material stream and processed in existing mechanical recycling facilities without the contamination or delamination issues of multi-material (multi-layer) laminate structures. The dominant multi-material flexible packaging structure (PET/PE laminate — a PET outer ply bonded to a PE sealant ply) is widely used for pouches, sachets, and flow-wrap packaging because of its excellent barrier and seal performance, but is not recyclable in mainstream plastic recycling streams because the two different polymers cannot be separated for recycling. Mono-material alternatives are designed to replace multi-material structures with a single-polymer construction that can enter existing recycling streams. The two primary mono-material flexible packaging structures are: PE/PE (polyethylene-to-polyethylene) — all layers of the film structure produced from polyethylene polymer families (LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, mLLDPE) — recyclable in HDPE/PE film recycling streams where collected. PP/PP (polypropylene-to-polypropylene) — all layers from polypropylene — recyclable in PP recycling streams. All-PE and all-PP films can be designed to achieve performance levels approaching traditional PET/PE laminates — including oxygen barrier (via EVOH or metallisation), moisture barrier, and machine-runnable sealability on standard form-fill-seal equipment. Recyclable rigid packaging includes monomaterial PP trays and cups (avoiding black carbon-black PP which is not detectable by NIR sorters), and clear PETG bottles (where the bottle, cap, and label are all PET or PET-compatible, avoiding PE-coated or PP-capped PET bottles in some recycling specs).
