Thorough oilseed cleaning before processing is essential for protecting processing equipment and producing quality oil and meal. Harvested oilseeds contain straw, leaves, stem fragments, weed seeds, soil, sand, stones, and metal debris. These contaminants cause: accelerated wear of expeller barrels, worms, and cage bars; damage to flaking rolls; increased oil colour and impurity load from soil and organic debris; quality defects in the meal; and food safety risks from metal and hard foreign body contamination of the finished products. A complete oilseed pre-cleaning section typically includes: a pre-cleaner (rotary scalperator or vibratory cleaner) to remove large-scale foreign material (straw, large stones) at high throughput; an aspirator (air classifier) to remove light material (chaff, dust, lightweight debris) using upward airflow; a magnetic separator (permanent magnetic drum or belt) to capture ferrous metal; a destoner (specific gravity separator) to remove stones and hard dense material; and, for some seeds, a size grader to remove undersized seeds and weed seeds. Sunflower seed typically contains 20–30% hull (shell) by weight. Dehulling before pressing or extraction has several benefits: the hull contains wax and non-oil material that reduces extraction efficiency and increases wax content in the crude oil; the hull dilutes the protein content of the meal (hull contains very little protein); and the hull can cause abrasive wear on extraction equipment. Full dehulling or partial dehulling (to 8–12% hull in the cleaned kernel fraction) is the standard in modern commercial sunflower processing. The hull fraction from dehulling can be sold as a biomass fuel or animal bedding material.
