Edible oil production begins with oilseed preparation: cleaning (pre-cleaner, destoner, magnetic separator) removes foreign matter; cracking and dehulling prepares the seed; flaking or grinding increases surface area for extraction. Oil is then extracted by pressing (mechanical expeller or cold press), solvent extraction (typically using hexane in large-scale plants), or a combination of both (pre-press followed by solvent extraction of the residual cake). The extracted crude oil is filtered and then refined through a sequence of stages depending on the intended use: degumming (removes phospholipids), neutralisation (reduces FFA), bleaching (removes colour and oxidation products), and deodorisation (removes volatile off-flavours). RBD (refined, bleached, deodorised) oil is the standard commercial product for cooking oil. The refined oil is then filtered, cooled, and filled into bottles, jerry cans, drums, or IBCs for distribution.
Oilseed types and their specific equipment requirements
Different oilseeds have significantly different processing requirements. Sunflower seeds require dehulling before processing to reduce wax and non-oil material in the crude oil. Soybeans are low in oil (18–20%) and almost always processed by solvent extraction — pressing alone is uneconomic. Groundnuts (peanuts) can be cold-pressed for premium groundnut oil or hot-pressed and refined for standard cooking oil. Palm processing is distinct from seed pressing: fresh palm fruit bunches must be sterilised, threshed, digested, and pressed within a very short time after harvest to prevent FFA increase. Palm kernel oil (from the kernel inside the palm nut) is a separate process requiring cracking, separation, and expelling. Coconut oil is produced by pressing copra (dried coconut) or by wet-processing fresh coconut. Each crop therefore requires a specific machinery configuration, and suppliers should confirm the species they have designed their equipment for.
