Paper cup construction types and lining options
Disposable paper cups are one of the highest-volume food service packaging items globally — used for hot beverages (coffee, tea, hot chocolate), cold beverages (cold brew, iced drinks, smoothies), and water dispensing. Cup constructions are: single-wall cups — a single ply of paperboard with an inner liquid-resistant lining; the most economical format, suitable for cold drinks and short-hold hot beverages; double-wall cups — two layers of board with an air gap between them, providing thermal insulation without a sleeve for hot beverage holding; ripple-wall cups — a corrugated sleeve bonded to the outer surface of a single-wall cup, providing insulation and a tactile grip without requiring a separate cup sleeve. Inner lining is critical — it determines liquid resistance, food contact compliance, and recyclability or compostability. PE (polyethylene) lining is the standard for most paper cups — bonded as a thin inner coat, providing excellent liquid resistance. PE-lined cups cannot be recycled in standard paper recycling streams (the PE must be separated from the fibre) but are widely recyclable in dedicated cup-recycling facilities available in some markets. PLA (polylactic acid) lining is a bioplastic alternative that is home compostable or industrially compostable (depending on grade) — a sustainable positioning option for specialty coffee and eco-positioned food service operators. PLA-lined cups require composting infrastructure to benefit from the claim. Aqueous (water-based) dispersion coatings represent a third option — applied without plastic film lamination, these coatings can enable the cup to be recycled in standard paper mills.
