Food-grade packaging film types and applications
Food-grade packaging film covers single-layer oriented films (used as base substrates for lamination or as overwrap), co-extruded films (multiple polymer layers produced in a single extrusion pass), and fully laminated multilayer structures converted from individual films. The main base films for food packaging are biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) — the most widely used film in flexible food packaging, offering good optical clarity, stiffness, print receptivity, and moderate moisture barrier; biaxially oriented polyester (BOPET) — higher stiffness, superior dimensional stability at temperature, and good barrier properties, used as the outer layer in high-performance laminates; cast polypropylene (CPP) — the standard heat-seal layer in most food flexible packaging laminates, with good seal strength at wide temperature ranges; and cast polyethylene (PE) — used as sealant layer in pillow pouch, FFS and overwrap applications. Aluminium foil laminated into a multilayer structure provides near-zero oxygen and moisture barrier for ambient-shelf-stable products. EVOH coextruded films provide a transparent oxygen barrier alternative to foil. All films in direct food contact must comply with EU Regulation 10/2011 (for EU market food applications) — the supplier must provide a Declaration of Compliance confirming compliance for the specific film grade and food contact application. For the US market, FDA 21 CFR Part 177 compliance documentation is required.
