Lagos is Nigeria's main commercial city and its principal seaport gateway. Most containerised imports arrive through the Apapa and Tin Can Island ports, with the newer Lekki deep sea port adding capacity to the east, and a large share of those goods is broken down and resold in Lagos before travelling on to the rest of the country. That is why traders from other states, and from neighbouring countries, come to Lagos to restock. The trade sits in three layers. At the top are manufacturers and importers, who sell by the container, the pallet or the carton, often through appointed distributors. In the middle are the market wholesalers, who own or rent shops in the big specialist markets and sell by the carton, the bale or the dozen. Below them are the retailers and hawkers who buy from those shops every day. A small business usually enters at the middle layer and moves up as its volumes grow. Each major market is run by a traders' association with its own leadership, rules and dispute process, which matters when something goes wrong with a purchase. Knowing which market handles which product saves days of wandering, because a market that is excellent for one line is often a poor place to buy anything else.
