Biodegradable cutlery for food service is produced from several materials, each with different performance characteristics. CPLA (crystallised polylactic acid) is the dominant material for heat-resistant compostable cutlery — the crystallisation process raises the heat deflection temperature of PLA from approximately 55°C to 70–85°C, making CPLA suitable for use with hot soups, coffee, and heated food. CPLA cutlery is rigid, has a slightly warm white or cream colour, and is certified under EN 13432 or ASTM D6400 for industrial composting. Standard PLA cutlery (non-crystallised) is not heat-resistant and deflects in contact with hot food — it suits cold beverages and ambient temperature applications only. PBSA (polybutylene succinate adipate) and PBAT blends are used for flexible film applications and some cutlery products — typically certified compostable and biobased. Starch-based blends (cornstarch, wheat starch with other bio-polymers) are used for economy-grade compostable cutlery — lower material cost but typically less heat-resistant and more brittle than CPLA. Bamboo and wood-pulp fibre cutlery are non-plastic alternatives that are also compostable and are sometimes grouped with biodegradable cutlery in buying briefs.
