Thermal transfer overprinting (TTO) is a coding technology that uses a heated print head to transfer ink from a ribbon onto a packaging substrate to produce high-resolution, high-quality codes. The TTO process: a print head containing hundreds of tiny thermal resistors (dots per inch) is pressed against an ink ribbon; the resistors heat and melt the ink at the precise points forming the character or image; the ink transfers from the ribbon to the packaging material below, producing the mark; the ribbon advances after each print to present fresh ink for the next print. TTO is used primarily for flexible packaging applications where high print quality on film is required. The main applications are: VFFS (vertical form-fill-seal) machines — TTO prints batch codes, best-before dates, lot numbers, and barcodes directly on the pouch film before or after the sealing step; HFFS flow-wrapping machines — TTO codes on the film as it wraps around the product; premade pouch filling machines — TTO prints on the film zone or on a label before the pouch is filled; label printing — desktop TTO printers produce printed labels on-demand for hand application or label applicators. Compared to CIJ inkjet, TTO produces higher print resolution (typically 200–300 dpi), better print quality for barcodes and QR codes, and no solvent ink — making it suitable for food contact surface-adjacent coding. Compared to laser coding, TTO has lower capital cost and no laser safety considerations, but requires ongoing ribbon consumables.
