A multihead combination weigher (also called a combination scale or multihead scale) achieves high-speed accurate weighing by simultaneously considering the individual weight of product in multiple weighing buckets and selecting the combination of buckets whose total is closest to the target weight. In a typical 14-head machine operating at 60 bags per minute, the computer evaluates thousands of possible bucket combinations per second, selects the closest combination, and simultaneously discharges those buckets through a central chute into the waiting bag below. The result is high fill accuracy (typically ±0.5–1g regardless of target weight) at high throughput. Multihead weighers are suitable for free-flowing solid products that can be spread and metered across the radial feeder trays: snacks (crisps, puffed snacks, popcorn), nuts and seeds (whole peanuts, almonds, cashews, mixed nuts), dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, mango pieces), fresh cut vegetables (broccoli florets, sliced beans, diced peppers), frozen vegetables, confectionery (hard candies, chocolate pieces, gummies), hardware parts (screws, bolts, clips), coffee beans (whole roasted). Multihead weighers are not suitable for fine powders, liquids, pastes, or very sticky products that would cling to and bridge the feeder surfaces. For sticky fresh produce or moist products, specialised radial feeder designs with reduced contact surfaces or anti-stick coatings are available.
