Plastic cutlery moulds are characterised by high cavity counts — from 4-cavity tooling for premium or custom designs to 32, 48, or 64-cavity moulds for high-volume commodity cutlery production. Higher cavity counts require larger machines (higher clamping force and shot weight) but reduce the per-piece tooling cost and increase output per hour. A 32-cavity fork mould running a 7-second cycle can produce approximately 16,000 forks per hour. Hot runner systems are standard for high-cavity cutlery moulds — they eliminate the sprue and runner waste generated by cold runner tooling, reducing material cost per piece significantly for high-volume production. For disposable cutlery, the typical material is polypropylene (PP) for its food-contact approval, flexibility, and cost. Polystyrene (PS) is used for particularly thin, rigid cutlery profiles. For biodegradable cutlery, CPLA (crystallised PLA) and PBSA blends are used — these require different processing temperatures and cooling conditions than PP, and the mould should be specified for the target material. Confirm material compatibility with the mould maker before ordering.
